Behind the Music

All good cowgirls now that sometimes it's just better with the boots on.  (If you don't know what I'm talking about, go rent "Life Or Something Like It" and check out Christian Kane's baseball player character getting out of bed with his boots on... yummmmy)  So after jamming onstage with Rodney Atkins one night, I got this riff in my head that wouldn't go away (the "ba---- by" part) and so I sat down with the guitar and started just figuring something that sounded good with it.  I started thinking about other (PG13) things that would make me want to keep my boots on and I remembered a few recent trips.  The first trip included a hissy fit by a friend when my other friend put her feet up on the dash.  And no cowboy ever likes dirty boots up on his dash board! The second trip, I was basically stripped naked in the security line at the Oakland airport and they wanted me to take my shoes off too.  Well, the man in front of me was walking barefoot (minus his nasty Birkenstock's) on the floor with his fungus feet dragging the whole way.  I politely informed them that they could follow me to the seats, sit me down, take my boots and x-ray them, then return them to me to put on before I walked anywhere, or wand me from head to toe, but I was NOT going to walk on that disgusting floor and catch some communicable disease.  Verse 2 was born. I finished this song at the Durango Songwriter's Expo in Santa Barbara in early June 2004, when Jeffrey Steele (my songwriting IDOL) decided to ride by on his bike and say "play me somethin!"... so I did.  (what a dork I am!) He dug it.  And the song was born.

Lyrics

Road trip in your Chevy

I’m makin’ myself at home

So I put my feet up

You tell me I can make a dashboard a footrest

But not in your truck

To take ‘em off would be against my religion

It’s an easy decision

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

You know that it don’t hurt to put some dirt into every little thing you do

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

I’m tellin’ you all I know is I ain’t goin’ without my lucky shoes

I’m keepin’ my boots on

Baby my boots on

JFK and I’m waitin’ in line at security

And they have it out for me

They got my keys, my belt, and all of my jewelry

Now they’re pointing at my feet

Well I could put ‘em through the x-ray

But I’d rather drive anyway

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

You know that it don’t hurt to put some dirt into every little thing you do

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

I’m tellin’ you all I know is I ain’t goin’ without my lucky shoes

I’m keepin’ my boots on

Baby my boots on

Well my other shoes just ain’t as cute

And my boots go great with my birthday suit

yea yea yea

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

You know that it don’t hurt to put some dirt

Into every little thing you do

I’m keepin’ my boots on baby

Hopin’ to drive you crazy

I’m tellin’ you all I know is I ain’t goin’

Without my lucky shoes

I’m keepin’ my boots on

Baby my boots on

Baby my boots on

Baby my boots on

Baby- I’m keepin’ my boots on
