Behind the Music

I grew up with two older brothers, and let's face it, I'm a little rough around the edges.  I play hookie from work to see Roger Clemens pitch, I think BBQ-ing is an art form, I can eat my weight in Mexican food, and I can hold my own in a drinkin' contest.  I like a man who can put me in my place, AND make me feel like a lady... just don't try to change what makes me who I am.  The "tattoo's and scars" are what give me my charm.  This song sums up my eternal plight to make the other half understand exactly that.

This song had an original lyric that focused on a 'guy' who tried to make me be a lady... but it just seemed to be missing a little something.  Then I went to a  really good song listening session at the 2004 Durango Song Expo in Santa Barbara with hit songwriter Ralph Murphy.  He told me to "get the a**hole out of the song".  So I did.  I rewrote the lyric immediately.  It's now an ANTHEM instead of just a big complaint.  Thanks Ralph!

Lyrics

No diamond ring would mean a thing

It’s just another losin’ bet

The boys all know they can’t bring me home

Cuz I scare their mama’s half to death

Well I might look like a proper girl

But I wear a lot of leather with my pearls

So forgive my frustrated sigh when I think about why

Why should I try to be a lady

Why should I wear the little bows in my hair

They say my heart breakin’, hip-shakin’, givin’ ‘em a headache

Ain’t ladylike but I don’t care

It’s so hard to be a lady

I just can’t seem to get the curls to come out right

But I’m a fast-talkin’, rock-n-rollin’, all night rodeo-in’

Dynamite woman tonight

I like whiskey and boys and high-priced toys

And I flirt with everything that moves

I love drinkin’ songs and honky-tonks and my real bad attitude

So if I keep gettin’ that no-no-no’in

Sooner or later I’ll be go-go-go’in

Where they like my dangerous side and the boys don’t cry

Why should I try to be a lady

Why should I wear the little bows in my hair

They say my heart breakin’, hip-shakin’, givin’ ‘em a headache

Ain’t ladylike but I don’t care

It’s so hard to be a lady

I just can’t seem to get the curls to come out right

But I’m a fast-talkin’, rock-n-rollin’, all night rodeo-in’

Dynamite woman tonight

I’m a heart-breakin’, hip-shakin’, givin’ ‘em a headache-in’

Dynamite woman tonight

I’m a two-steppin’, toe-tappin’, tush-pushin’, boot-slappin’,

Cotton pickin’, Jack drinkin’, foul mouthed and dirty thinkin’

Fast-talkin’, rock-n-rollin’, all night rodeo-in’

Dynamite woman tonight
